Apple TV: initial thoughts

So, as a nice little gift to myself I picked up an Apple TV tonight. First thing I always have to say is that Apple ALWAYS has the best packaging. The setup could not have been easier. It was basically plug in 2 cables and type a code into iTunes to enable the system to sync. Then it was just a matter of watching the content.

A couple take aways. The idea is great but there are a few holes in the system but none of these will be new if you’ve read any reviews of the product.

Content

  • The content from iTunes playes at a lower than 1080i. I generally try not to watch non-high def if I don’t have to. I know HD takes a ton of HD space but drives are getting cheaper every day and I can add some more drives if that’s what it takes. Please- give me the option! :-)
  • The movies look ok and the TV shows look a little better. Could be expectations. The anime show I downloaded from iTunes for my European vataction looks really good on the big screen.
  • The content I ripped as a test was actually worse than what was available in iTunes. I had originally ripped it to test on my iPod and it looks good. It even looked good on the 8″ screen from my new DVD / iPod player. But when it went on the big screen it was not great.

That’s as far as I’ve made it so far but when i rip more content at a higher sample I’ll let you know if it makes it better.
