Joon-Soo is sooooo helpful

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

I bought a bike rack today, picked up a coffee at the Starbucks near the office and then went to the office parking lot to hook it all up. Everything was going well until I got to adding the locks. Right then Joon-Soo comes rolling up, I handed him the locks, and he got it setup in like 10 seconds.

So, I have a bike rack and it is 100% setup! Thanks Joon-Soo!

I hate game companies…

Why do game releases on Sundays? Why make us wait all weekend and get only one day of play in? Release on Friday so we can take the day off and get 3 days in!

A problem with the book on CD in the car thing mixed with blogging…

Friday, April 20th, 2007

I’m listening to Atlas Shrugged on CD and have realized a huge flaw… I’m listening on my way places and not reading near a PC so blogging about what I’m hearing is a disjointed process. Since there are so many little details in the book that I wanted to call out and discuss it’s hard to keep them all in my head while I drive.

I’ll have to come up with a better solution. Maybe I’ll just twitter as I drive and then copy the comments over to the blog! Yeah! I’m SURE that’s a good idea! ;-)

So far we’ve passed the following events that rank as my favorites:

  • Dagney at the ball
  • Ellis Wyatt demanding service and not lip service
  • Reardon Life
  • Lillian trapping Hank about the date for her party
  • Dagney swapping her bracelet
  • Both professors discussing their favorite pupils and their differeing views of their eventual worth

I’m just about to Hank’s date in court.

Real World oddities

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Seems a little odd to be drafting messages about Atlas Shrugged and then switch to the Real World.

This week’s episode was frightening. Brook saw a guy at a restaurant and gave him her number. They met up at a bar and his big complaint was that it was loud and dark so they couldn’t talk. Score one for him for actually wanting to know the person. Then she just kept touching him and being all goofy and he was looking at her like, “uh, I don’t know you yet.” The next day he calls her and asks for a 2nd date and suggests bowling.

If he had called her names 2x what Don Imus said she couldn’t have looked more horrified. Seriously. She was almost in tears as she tried to tell one of her roommates the tale of woe. Between tears she said, “Do I look like the kind of girl who wants to go bowling???”

I wonder if he’s watching the show now saying, “Dodged a bullet there!”?

Atlas Shrugged Revisited…

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

If you’ve known me for about 5 min you probably know I love this book. One of the first gifts I ever gave Alice was her own copy of the book. Yes, quite romantic to be sure!

I’ve read it many times and this weekend I picked up the book on CD for the car. :-)  So… here we go with this reading and set of comments. Enjoy!

It isn’t “dirty play” if you’re following the rules.

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

In the Amazing Race there is a thing called a “Yield” where you can basically stop one other team for 30 min. People are forever saying this is dirty… but I can’t figure out why. It is built into the game… how can it be dirty?

Hey Dad- it was great to have you visit!

Surprise Alice… it’s your birthday party!

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

So, last night we had a surprise party for Alice. :-) The plan was to meet up with our friends for a nice dinner out.

As far as Carl and Alice knew we were heading out to dinner at Maggiano’s like any other dinner out. I was rushing those two because we were running a little late. I walked in the front door and saw 15 or so friends standing there so I knew Alice would be shocked. She took two steps in and looked at me with that look that said, “What are you doing?” I looked back and said, “Uh… recognize anyone?” She took a 3 count and then that’s when it hit home. :-)

So, this is how the night started. From here we had a drink in the bar and waited for our table to be called. It was a fun mix from the start with a bunch of different parts of our lives coming together and it was really nice how different folks went out of their way to welcome Carl.

The restaurant has a rule about parties over 14 people and required us to order off a family style menu. I decided to delegate the decision making and rolled out my plan in a wildly unorganized method. I broke the table into 3 sets of 6 and each section ordered one of the courses. We had the following:

  • Bruschetta
  • Calamari
  • Caesar Salad
  • Chopped Salad
  • Shrimp & Angel Hair al Arrabbiata
  • Four Cheese Ravioli
  • Chicken Parmesan
  • Beef Medallions, Portabella Mushrooms, Garlic Mashed Potatoes
  • Tiramisu
  • Chocolate Zuccotto Cake

(If you were there and I got it wrong… let me know!)

The waiter was awesome and did a good job hanging with our crazy style.

Alice got to have dinner with 16 friends, her father and myself and it was a great time! We’ll have to figure out how to surprise her next year. :-)

Global Giving

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

I’m not sure if you guys have heard of Global Giving but it is a pretty cool site that lets you donate to some pretty interesting causes.

One cause I heard about that seemed really cool is the Train Platform Schools for Children in India that has the mission is to “help the children deprived of normal conditions of life and create a society free from child labor, exploitation and abandonment. As the development of these children is worthwhile when they become active participants and positive contributors to their communities, it is aimed to provide joyful and innovative education, health care, supplementary nutrition, recreation, counseling, vocational training, rehabilitation and repatriation services to these children.”

Check it out and look for ideas that appeal to you and might be something you’d want to support.

My favorite quote from the Amazing Race this week

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

Danielle: “why did they yield us?”
Eric: “Because they’re dirty pirate hookers.”

If only I could make this my Skype message.
